Explore Sauk Prairie (Sauk City & Prairie du Sac)

The twin cities of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac sit side-by-side on the banks of the majestic Wisconsin River. Known collectively as Sauk Prairie, this area is a beautiful blend of riverfront adventure and small-town charm.

Whether you’re looking to entertain the kids for an hour or spend a full day exploring, here are our top picks:

Family Favorites

  • Riverfront Park & Splash Pad: Located right on Water Street in Sauk City, this is the perfect spot for kids to burn off energy. It features a modern playground and a massive 2,250 sq. ft. splash pad with interactive water features.

  • The Merrimac Ferry: A 15-minute drive north brings you to Wisconsin’s only free car ferry. It’s a fun, 7-minute ride across the river that kids (and adults!) love.

  • Dr. Evermor’s Forevertron: Visit the world’s largest scrap-metal sculpture! This quirky outdoor park features "intergalactic" machines and mechanical creatures made from salvaged industrial parts.

Outdoor Adventure

  • The Great Sauk State Trail: This beautiful, paved trail runs right along the Wisconsin River through both towns. It's perfect for a scenic morning walk, run, or bike ride.

  • Devil’s Lake State Park: About 20 minutes north, this is one of Wisconsin’s most famous parks. It offers breathtaking bluff hikes, sandy swimming beaches, and boat rentals.

  • Canoeing & Tubing: Rent a tube or canoe from a local outfitter for a lazy afternoon floating down the Wisconsin River.

Sips & History

  • Wollersheim Winery & Distillery: Perched on a hillside overlooking the river, this historic estate is a must-visit. Enjoy a tasting, tour the aging caves, or sit on the patio with a glass of wine.

  • Vintage Brewing Co.: A local staple for "elevated Americana" food and craft brews, featuring a great outdoor seating area with river views.

  • Culver’s (The Original!): Did you know Sauk City is the birthplace of Culver's? Stop by the original location for a ButterBurger and some fresh frozen custard.
